Society for the Social History of Medicine Conference, University of Strathclyde, Glasgow

The team will be presenting at the Society for the Social History of Medicine Conference from the 16th to 19th of July 2024. This year’s conference, held in the University of Strathclyde, focuses on the theme of “Resistance”. Alice Mauger’s paper is entitled “Resisting a Stereotype: Evolving Responses to the “Drunken Irish”, c. 1960-2000”. Steven Taylor will be giving a paper titled “Beer party USA!’: Rethinking Beer in 1960s America?”. Morgan Wait’s paper is called “Lesbians on Poppers: LGBT Nightlife in Dublin 1975-93″. Hannah Kempel’s is titled ” “A Psychological Sort of Pressure”: Mental Healthcare, Resistance, and the Prevention of Terrorism Act”

Radical Futures Conference, University College Cork

Morgan Wait spoke at the Radical Futures Conference at UCC to be held on the 9th of May 2024. Morgan’s paper was titled “Youth Rebellion and the Irish Summer of Love” and looked at LSD and hippie culture in Ireland.

WHAI Conference, Queen’s University, Belfast

Hannah Kempel presented at the Women’s History Association of Ireland Conference at Queen’s University Belfast held on the 26th and 27th of April 2024. Hannah’s paper was titled “Nonconflicting Interests: Multilayered Relationships Between Mental Health Care, Gender, and the Irish Migrant Community in England” and looked at the critical mental health strand of DIASPORA.

HSTM Conference, Carlow College

Morgan Wait gave a paper on LSD and hippie culture in Ireland at the History of Science, Technology, and Medicine in Ireland Conference. The conference took place in Carlow College on the 26th and 27th of April.

Drinking Studies Network Conference 2024, University of Bristol

Alice Mauger recently gave a paper entitled “Writing a Stereotype? Scientific and Literary Portrayals of Irish Drinking in London and New York, since c. 1945” at the Drinking Studies Network annual conference at the University of Bristol. The conference was held from 1-3 March 2024.

Irish History Students’ Association Conference, University of Galway

Hannah Kempel presented on her research at this year’s Irish History Students’ Association Conference at the University of Galway on 2 March 2024. Hannah’s talk was titled  “Isolation, Risk, and Community: Understanding Researchers’ Responses to Irish Migrant Health after 1950”.

University of Oslo, Norway

The team attended the European Association for the History of Medicine and Health conference at the University of Oslo. Alice Mauger, Steven Taylor, and Morgan Wait participated in a panel with Peder Clark (University of Strathclyde) entitled “Public Health and Community Responses to Alcohol and Drugs Crises in Contemporary Britain“.
