Alice Mauger

Alice Mauger is the principal investigator on DIASPORA. She is an assistant professor in modern Irish social history at University College Dublin, with a focus on psychiatry, addiction, alcohol and drugs from the nineteenth century to present day. Her publications include The Cost of Insanity in Nineteenth-Century Ireland (Palgrave Macmillan) and a recent co-edited special issue of Cultural and Social History on ‘Cultural Representations of Intoxication’. Her research to date has been supported by the European Research Council, Wellcome Trust, Science Foundation Ireland, Health Research Board, and Enterprise Ireland.

Steven Taylor

Steven Taylor is a postdoctoral researcher on DIASPORA. He is a historian of health, medicine, and welfare with a focus on drinking culture and substance use amongst the Irish communities of London and New York. His current research examines how Irish migrants were constructed and treated by state and religious entities, with a particular focus on alcohol and drugs. Steve has previously taught at the University of Kent and University of Leicester. He also received a Wellcome Trust Research Resources Bursary (2015) and held a Wellcome Trust ISSF ECR Fellowship at the University of Leicester (2017-18). Steve has published widely, including his monograph Child Insanity in England; and edited collections Healthy Minds and Voices in the History of Madness.

Morgan Wait

Morgan Wait is a postdoctoral researcher on DIASPORA. She is a historian of contemporary Irish social history with a focus on the history of drug use and the history of media in Ireland. Morgan’s current work looks at the history of recreational drug use in the late 20th century with a particular emphasis on cultural representations of drug use. Morgan recently completed her PhD at Trinity College, Dublin which explored the history of women and television in Ireland during the long 1960s. She has published work on women’s programmes in Alphaville Journal and has work in other outlets such as RTÉ Brainstorm and CST Online.

Hannah Kempel

Hannah Kempel is a PhD researcher on DIASPORA. Her research interests include the
history of medicine, twentieth-century Irish and British history, and social history. Hannah’s current research focuses on mental health and mental illness among Irish migrants in England after 1945. She recently completed a Master’s degree in the History of Medicine and Welfare in Society at University College Dublin.
